Greek Mythology: Atlas
Atlas was the Titan god of astronomy and navigation. He was one of the Titans who fought against the Gods in the war between the Olympian Gods and the Titans. As punishment for being on the losing side of the war, Zeus condemned Atlas to stand eternally on the western side of the world and hold the sky between his shoulders.
For this project, I plan to portray the classic image/scene of Atlas holding the celestial globe upon his shoulders. I could create a large globe for my model to "hold" upon their shoulders using a stencil. I will set up the scene by using multiple colors of lights. I will use a green light beneath Atlas to represent the Earth he's standing on, and purple/blue lights for the globe he will be holding. This will allow someone to differentiate between the Earth and Sky. My model will be kneeling on the ground, pretending to hold the globe on their shoulders, while another student holds the stencil in place. I will practice illuminating the scene in different ways, including from the front and below. This will allow me to experiment with the different ways the illumination can create drama.
For my mythology photo, I decided to shoot the Greek Titan of astronomy, Atlas. In the story of Atlas, he is punished by Zeus and condemned to hold the sky between his shoulders. For my photo, I have Atlas kneeling and holding up the celestial globe on his shoulder. I also have bright green lights behind him to add vibrance and a celestial feeling to the photo. I edited the photo to make Atlas black and white, making him a more Titan-like figure.
