Yun-fei tou
Of the photographers I researched, my favorite was Yun-Fei Tou, who had a very powerful and heartbreaking photo series. His work tackles the subject of the euthanization of shelter dogs, and captures these dogs in their last moments (minutes or hours prior to euthanization). It forces viewers to acknowledge the sad endings that many of these animals meet in shelters. Although the portraits and concept are incredibly sad, Yun-Fei Tou photographs these animals in a way that captures their dignity.
I appreciate this series because it not only appeals to a powerful sense of emotion, but it highlights an important and often overlooked issue of the high rates of euthanization of shelters. Older and more beat up dogs especially are often overlooked in shelter by adopters, leaving them to remain caged until their deaths. Shelters lack the resources to shelter the large influx of animals they receive, forcing them to euthanize many animals everyday. This is a very troubling and important issue in my eyes, as someone who loves animals (especially dogs). Yun-Fei Tou's photographs are a great way to spread the awareness of this. Technically, his portraits of these animals are beautiful. His photos dignify these animals in their last moments, and I appreciate the detail, emotion, and story behind his photos.
